fashion: invitation to the grey ant show
The invitation to Grey Ant’s SS 2011 show arrived yesterday and the invitation is just too good not to share. If Bette Midler was any inspiration for this collection, it’s going to be good.
throwback: “Janet.” album
My love for JANET JACKSON began in the early 90′s. As she completed my favorite movie of all time, POETIC JUSTICE (which taught me to put Tabasco on my popcorn and burn the end of my braids), she recorded her first album with Virgin Records titled “JANET.” I remember the pretty orange colored CD and the hidden track at the end with lyrics that never made any sense to me but I didn’t care because Janet was always “on some other shit”.
This album has a special place in my heart and I don’t think I’ve ever played an album out the way I did this one. Hearing any song on this album brings me back to my early teenage years and I’m transported to my California bedroom during a time when it was all about talking on the phone (mine was a see through neon Conair), Zima, Motorola pagers, and wearing the colors burgundy and forest/hunter green together while listening to highly age inappropriate song (particularly the end) “THROB”.
Her videos during this time always left me longing to hang out with her “cool” friends who seemed a little “different”.
TRAVEL: OH THE PLACES YOU CAN GO
Everyone has a list of things they want to do before they fall over and die. It’s often referred to as the… BUCKET LIST! Let’s be honest for a second, we all work too damn hard towards our goals and often leave our dreams to the wayside, hoping that they will magically happen on their own.
My friends and I all agreed that traveling is listed (in no particular order) on our top three things to do. I mean, who wouldn’t want the chance to hop on a plane and fly to a location that they’ve never been to. Well our dear VIOLETTE readers, if you have some free time to spare, JetBlue recently brought back its’ All-You-Can-Jet pass. This pass will allow anyone to travel to an unlimited number of cities over a one-month period. So here’s the perfect opportunity to make at least one dream happen!
Here’s the deal:
The pass is valid for flights between September 7th and October 6th.
Tier one: A pass that excludes travel on Fridays and Sundays $499
Tier two: An unlimited pass for $699

fashion: my belgian designer infatuation
If I were forced to edit my favorite designers to a top three it would be extremely difficult but they would be Belgian designer RAF SIMONS (for JIL SANDER & RAF SIMONS), Japanese designer REI KAWAKUBO (Comme des Garcons) and American but recently French designer RICK OWENS.
Now right after those three proceed the rest of my favorites and they’re all BELGIAN like RAF. I’m such a Belgian designer devotee and feel like a NKOTB fan when I see their collections. These illustrious Belgians are: KRIS VAN ASSCHE (DIOR HOMME & KRIS VAN ASSCHE), DRIES VAN NOTEN, MARTIN MARGIELA (even if he has left his namesake brand) and ANN DEMEULEMEESTER. They are brilliant and the clothes they create excite me. Their designs are wearable and novel.
I find it compelling that Belgium has produced such individually gifted designers who’s each unique talent has impacted the fashion world. Is it in the water? Should I be drinking water from a well in Belgium to accelerate genius? I’ll start with Chimay and pommes frites.
QUESTION: IS SHE EVEN TRYING?
Drop dead gorgeous Charlize Theron poses for a six-page pictorial in the upcoming September issue of Elle Russia.
I’m convinced that she’s one of the few women in Hollywood that does sexy in such a classy way.

remembering: DJ AM
Today marks one year since the death of DJ AM.
His talent was a gift to the music industry and he’s sorely missed.
I had the pleasure of hearing him play for the first time in 2005 at the EMI Post Grammy party at The Beverly Hills Hotel where he threw it down.
I recall watching his GONE TOO FAR addiction series on MTV shortly after his death and being struck by how honest and caring his cause was. It was very hard to watch knowing his fate. His heart was focused on other peoples recovery and you could FEEL his conviction.
I hope that his contribution to the music industry is always commemorated.
eat out elle clay: THE COMMODORE
as a southerner living in the big titty, i’m always searching for a taste of home. my quest for the best fried chicken in new york took me to the COMMODORE in brooklyn. the bestie and i arrived to what looked like a sketchy motel bar, ready for some delectable eats.

“saltie” potato salad. good, but a bit too creamy for me.

“hot breast” chicken sandwich. the cole slaw and pickles helped to cool the spicy kick at the end.

3 thighs and biscuits arrived to our table with honey butter and hot sauce. the chicken was crispy, moist and well seasoned. while tasty, the honey butter was an unnecessary condiment for the bite sized biscuits. the biscuits were just right, not too flaky, buttery or dough-ty (too dense) as my auntie would say.
my quest for the best fried chicken in new york continues…but don’t be surprised if you see me licking my fingers in a back booth at the COMMODORE.

fashion: grey ant fam
My girl NATALIE LEVY and her partner GRANT KRAJECKI of GREY ANT are doing big thangz here in New York as they prepare to show their latest collection at New York Fashion Week, only a few weeks away.
GREY ANT was chosen as one of the 12 designers to be in the Fashion Incubator, a program the CFDA along with the New York City Economic Corporation created to support emerging designers.
I stopped by their Garment District studio to gush over their illustrious STATUS shades newborn sibling: freshly launched KENNEDY shades which are sure to become another cult favorite amongst cool celebs and fashionitsa(o)s alike.
Their collections have been amazing thus far so I’m excited to see what Grant has created in their New York State of mind. The GREY ANT show is definitely one I am looking forward to.
